Keep Your Eyes on the Prize!
Posted August 15, 2016
These are our parting tips as you enter your first semester of credit classes.
The day before class, check CUNY First and remember write down all the information about when & where your classes will meet. Write down the class, building, & room number.
On the first day of class
Throughout the semester, keep your eyes on the prize!

On the first day of class
- Look a door for room changes. Sometimes classes move location and no one will call or e-mail you to let you know. The best place to look is the door.
- Show up on time
- Program professor's email & phone into your phone and email address book
- Get contact info from 3 classmates
- Read & annotate syllabus
- Buy/borrow books (borrow if you're not sure you'll remain enrolled in class)
Throughout the semester, keep your eyes on the prize!
Andrea Espanola
Way to Go!
Posted July 14
Andrea Espanola (pictured with her Advisor, Rhonda Harrison) completed CUNY Start in Spring 2015. She is a Science for Forensics Major who has achieved a 3.5 GPA, is a Peer Mentor, a student representative to the Student Government Association and a part of the IMPACT Club (a leadership group) at BMCC!
Her advice is that CUNY Start students should join clubs because it's a good way to network and join extra activities. Andrea was mentored through the Peer Mentoring program at BMCC before she became a mentor. She wanted to become a mentor because she found it helpful to have someone guide her through the college transition process.

Registration Week
July 7 - 21
Posted July 5
During registration weeks, the campus urges students to come in and register for classes. That means that the campus is overwhelmed by thousands of students who need help registering for classes and the best classes are filling up quickly. If you completed CUNY Start in Phase 1, you should have already registered for class. If you haven't registered, you should act quickly. If you don't, you may not get a seat in the class that you want. If you still have to clear registration holds, do it immediately, because when the 7th comes around, there will be long lines at every office.
City Service Corps & Target
Posted July 5
City Service Corps is a paid internship that allows people to work with a New York City agency. Some of those agencies will require a college degree. Some may only require a high school diploma. To find out more, click here. This opportunity might be best for part time students, because the position is full time.
Below, I'm sure you all recognize the logo for Target. They're hiring also.

References: A Tip
Posted June 30, 2016
Every now and again, students who have completed CUNY Start contact our office to request reference letters in order to apply for a scholarship, a job, and to study abroad.
If you'd like to request a letter in the future, here are the steps you must follow:
1. Contact your advisor via e-mail
2. Make your request as early as possible. (If your request is close to the deadline, you might not get a letter in time.)
3. Remind the advisor of the semester and year that you were in CUNY Start
4. State the reason you want a letter (for a job, for a scholarship, for alternative spring break, etc.)
5. Indicate who the letter must be addressed to (first & last name & title)
6. If there's a form that must be completed, send either the link or bring in the form with your part already completed. In fact, some advisors may ask you to provide a first draft of the letter. The advisor will then review it, revise it, and then sign it. (If you would prefer to get a letter from your former Math and/or Reading/Writing teacher, please contact that instructor directly.)
When the letter is complete you’ll be notified about when you can pick it up.
After you get the letter, visit the office to say “thank you”, regardless of whether you got what you wanted because of the letter. It’s just common courtesy that is expected of all professionals.

Brian Hammer completed CUNY Start in Fall 2014. Even though he was in the Full Time program, he entered credit classes as a part time student and is a Liberal Arts major. In Spring 2016, he made the Dean’s List! His strategy was to approach his professors any time he had questions. It’s a tip we could all benefit from.
If voting isn't important, why is it such a struggle to vote?

Posted 5/31/16
Marcio Martinez completed CUNY Start classes in Fall, 2014. He's a Liberal Arts major who plans to be a filmmaker in the future. His financial aid package included Work Study, which allowed him to work in BMCC's Media Center. He did so well that he may be hired once the work study is exhausted. He's attended his first day of class in "Black Man in Contemporary Society" and is excited to study the subject this summer. Upon graduation, he plans to go to City College to double major in History and Film & Video.
Tuesday, May 31 - Phase 2 Begins!
Posted 5/30/16
This is just a reminder that Phase 2 begins tomorrow. Please refer to the schedule you were given on Thursday or Friday to know what room to report to, and at what time. If there is any confusion about your start time, just come in. (There is no one in the office today to take your phone call or respond to an e-mail.)
For those of you who might be thinking that you would prefer to start summer vacation early and skip Phase 2 - please don't! Think long term. In October or November, you might have regrets about sitting in a remedial class that might not have been necessary if you stayed 1 month longer in CUNY Start. This is a chance to show how much grit you really have.
See you tomorrow.

Taking Care of Business & Test Results
Posted 5/20
Now that Phase 1 testing is over, you have a few days to relax and recuperate. Part Time students will come in for test scores on Thursday, 5/26. Full Time students will come in on Friday, 5/27. Check your e-mail and voicemail on Wednesday, 5/25 for messages from your advisor, telling you exactly when to come in.
Please use Monday (5/23), Tuesday (5/24), and Wednesday (5/25) to take care of personal business, including doctor/dentist appointments, helping out a family member, or even working extra hours to earn some extra cash. People who need more time to study and who will be here for Phase 2 will have a maximum of only 2 absences, which must last until testing in July.

Dear Students,
We see you, and we appreciate you.
If you think back to the first day of program, back in February, I’m sure you’ll notice that your class is much smaller. Over the past 4 months, some of your peers have had to leave because they could not balance the challenges of CUNY Start with other life challenges.
Yet, we’ve noticed that you have been able to come to class consistently, participate in class, and get your assignments done and maintain a job, take care of children/family, pay bills, and manage train delays, illness, discouragement, death, bad weather, injury, fatigue, disability, and emergencies.
Regardless of how the first round of testing goes, you’ve demonstrated that you have the grit necessary to be successful in college!
Sincerely,
Advisement Team

Office of Accessibility Registration Deadline - May 2
Posted 4/12/16
Students with with documented disabilities that entitle them to get accommodations such as extra testing time, a quiet room to test in, or a calculator, have until May 2nd to get registered with the Office of Accessibility (OOA) on the main campus (199 Chambers Street, room N360). Bring your documentation directly to that office to get registered, and then let your CUNY Start Advisor know. OOA will be open on April 18th and during Spring Break, so use your time off wisely.
Having extra testing time available is like having extra money. If you don't need to spend it, you don't have to, but if you need it, it's there.

H.S. Senior Creates App
Posted 4/05/16
Sarahi Espinoza Salamanca had a need, and created an app to address it instead of waiting for someone else to help her out. That’s the essence of the entrepreneurial spirit. Whether you major in Business Administration or Human Services or anything in between, being able to recognize a need and provide a product or service is important. In Sarahi’s case, she invented an app which will be launched later this month, DREAMer’s Roadmap, to help undocumented students find scholarships. You can read more about her in the article, New App Helps Undocumented Immigrants Find College Scholarships. If she can do that in high school, imagine what you can do as a college student!

April is Presentation Month!

Your presentation is an opportunity to pull together all the research and hard work you've done over the semester and share it with your classmates, advisors and teachers. It's also the last hurdle to clear in Seminar before testing. In other words, students who do not complete a Presentation will fail Seminar and become ineligible to take the CUNY assessment tests in reading, writing and in math.

More about Conference Week
Week of March 7th
Posted 3/02/16
Please be aware that there is no Seminar during the week of March 7.
All of you have at at least 1 whole day off from classes during conference week. Normally, being off from class just means that you now have time to do other college-related work. It's not a vacation day. All offices at BMCC - Financial Aid, Bursars, Counseling Center, Admissions, Library - will be open. You have the day off from class to (1) work on your informational interview assignment, (2) get registered with the Office of Accessibility (OOA), (3) take care of personal appointments without interfering with your school schedule, (4) start clearing any known registration holds, (5) visit the Student Helpdesk to get help with claiming your computer username & password.
You have 1 day off so that your teacher(s) and advisor can meet with their other class of students. If you need to speak with an advisor or teacher, therefore, you must try to reach them either before or after the hours when your class is normally in session.

Jump Start Summer Tuition Waiver
for CUNY Start Students
Posted 2/26/16
During summer 2016, BMCC will offer a variety of tuition waivers to assist students in accumulating credits toward degree completion. A tuition waiver is like getting a coupon from BMCC. Students who get the waiver will not have to pay tuition, but they are responsible for the fees and the cost of textbook(s). Additionally, if a student accepts a waiver, and then either fails the class or withdraws from the class, they would then be responsible for paying the tuition.
The Jump Start waiver was designed for CUNY Start students. Read more about Jump Start by clicking here.

Withdrawal Option
Deadlines - April 7 & 8
Posted 2/26/16
CUNY Start is an intense program. For those of you who realize that it's been a struggle to keep up with your work and that you're falling behind and are starting to receive warning letters, consider the following:
After you have considered all your options and discussed the situation with your advisor & significant others, withdrawal is the last option. Students don't normally like to consider this option because it's seen as a sign of failure or they are worried that they it will take them longer to graduate. The purpose of withdrawing is to gather your resources and make plans so that you can return to CUNY Start as a successful student. If a person is dismissed from CUNY Start, they can not come back.
The last day to withdraw from CUNY Start for Part Time students is April 7, and for Full Time Students the deadline is April 8.
- Discuss the difficulty with your advisor
- Use the Assignment Tracker you were given in Orientation
- Attend tutoring
- Re-arrange you work schedule
- Reduce your work hours
- Ask your family & friends for help with childcare and other responsibilities
- Withdrawal from CUNY Start

Voice Your Choice: The Pathway to Free Community College
Posted 1/28/16
President Obama said he thought community college should be free. Unfortunately, this is his last year in office. The only way to make the dream a reality is to vote in politicians who are going to carry out that vision.
Years ago the Board of Elections used to send out an Election Guide telling citizens when to vote & who and what we were voting for. Now, there’s nothing. Fortunately CUNY is launching its own campaign to get help us out. Check out Voice Your Choice to see more.
Until then, keep these dates in mind:
